“What time is it, Dennard?”

“Nearly five, m’lady.”

Olympia leant back in the tub, luxuriating in the warm water. When she’d first gotten into the high, slant-backed tub, the water had been so hot she could barely withstand it. But after soaking for nearly thirty minutes, the water had lost much of its heat, and all of it seemed to be stored inside Olympia. She felt as though her bones had melted.

“I suppose I have to get out, don’t I?”

“You still have some time, m’lady.”

She sighed. “I love it here. I love being with Leland and I love being with Colby and I love everything about this estate.” She raised her right foot out of the water, pointing her toe towards the ceiling. Her flesh was normally quite pale, but the hot water had transformed her skin to a soft shade of pink. “I’ve fallen in love with two men, Dennard. What do you figure the odds are that the Ton would understand that?”

“Nil, m’lady.”

She looked at the servant and gave him a smile. “That was brutally honest.”

“You’ll find that polite society is not really very polite.” He raised an eyebrow in self-mockery. “And who would know that better than I?”

“You’re right, of course…but I wish you weren’t.”

Dennard shrugged and replied, “I am a realist with few illusions regarding society. Sometimes there is little comfort in being right.”

When she had first eased her passion-weary body into the bath tub, there had been a layer of soap bubbles a foot thick. Now there wasn’t a single bubble. Olympia sighed again, not so much because she had to leave the embrace of the warm water, but because it meant she had to get dressed to leave the safe haven of Prince Mallory’s palatial ancestral estate.

She got her feet beneath her and rose slowly, water streaming down her body. Dennard stood at the ready, holding a hand out. Olympia took it, stepped out of the tub onto the towel on the floor, spread her feet and extended her arms.

As Dennard began wiping her body dry, Olympia asked, “Have you ever performed such services for any of Prince Mallory’s other…um…female guests?”

“No, m’lady. You seem to be the exception to all of the prince’s rules.” Dennard, in full, immaculate livery, was wiping his way slowly up the front of Olympia’s thighs. “The staff and I are really quite amazed at the prince’s change since you came into his life.” He smiled up at Olympia, and she wondered what gift she could give Dennard to show her appreciation. “He has been most insistent that, first and foremost, I am to see to your every wish and need.”

“But why doesn’t he have that maid from Wales attend to my needs? Marian is her name, isn’t it?”

Dennard pressed the towel lightly against the damp, auburn curls at the apex of Olympia’s thighs. She smiled at him, but felt not an inkling of passion.

“I’m surprised you have to ask, m’lady, since I thought you already knew.”

“Oh?”

“Marian is a woman partial to women.
